Announcing the New Podcast, "Brains vs. Beliefs: Debunking Psychological Misconceptions!"
By Emily Stark and Karla Lassonde
We are expanding our science communication work to create a new podcast titled Brains vs. Beliefs: Debunking Psychological Misconceptions!
This podcast covers the fascinating world of psychological science with a focus on debunking popular myths such as the idea that we only use 10% of our brain and opposites attract. Each month we will communicate “the truth” about a commonly held belief based on research in psychology.
This podcast grew out of our shared concern of how common psychology myths are and our commitment to helping people understand how scientific research informs knowledge. Our students have helped shape the development of this podcast and we intend to continue integrating our students’ work in future episodes, perhaps even including guest hosts.
Episodes are released monthly beginning in November, 2025, each featuring a different misconception related to psychology. Our episodes describe these mistaken beliefs, explore where these beliefs came from, and explain how these misconceptions have been tested through research. You can access episodes wherever you find podcasts, and also find episodes with references and transcripts here at the Communicating Psychological Science website-just use the podcast heading at the top of the page to find episodes. Use the contact form to share your own ideas and feedback!
Below, we share a poster created for the Society for the Teaching of Psychology- Annual Conference on Teaching (STP-ACT), in October 2025. You can learn more about how we developed this podcast and have worked to center student ideas and contributions throughout the process.
We hope that you enjoy our new podcast, Brains vs. Beliefs: Debunking Psychological Misconceptions!
